Easter means candy – especially chocolate – and lots of it! Worried about your teeth while digging into Easter’s decadent chocolate offerings? Today we’re going to talk about how you can enjoy the holiday but stop the sweet feast from damaging your teeth.
Don’t neglect your routine. It is especially important that throughout the Easter weekend you make sure that you do not ditch your oral hygiene routine. Make sure that you brush your teeth at least twice a day, starting with when you wake up and remember to brush when you get home also, even if it is late.
Fluoride and floss are friends. Brushing your teeth regularly is key to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, but if this isn’t possible then why not take a fluoride mouthwash along so you can rinse after meals? You can also chew sugar-free chewing gum to help minimize damage, and bring some floss along to dislodge any stubborn food residue when you cannot brush or rinse.
Schedule a treat time. It is inevitable that sweets and chocolate are going to be consumed over Easter; however you can minimize the damage they cause by limiting yourself to consuming sweet treats at a specific time, possibly right after meals as a dessert.
Cut back on the biting. Toffees and hard sweets can pull out fillings as well as getting stuck between your teeth! Instead of sticky sweets and toffees, why not opt for some softer, melt-in-the-mouth treats instead, such as caramel-filled eggs or pralines?
Embrace the dark side of chocolate. Dark chocolate is often a better choice as it can contain less sugar than other chocolate options. Also try not to go for the biggest egg you can find – sticking to a smaller-sized egg will satisfy your cravings and your desire to indulge while limiting the damage caused to your teeth.
Wash it down. Try to drink plenty of water when indulging in Easter treats, instead of ﬁzzy drinks and sugary juices. Rinsing with water after each dose of chocolate will rinse away some of the excess sugar in the mouth.
